Basalt kingdom with a castle, stone waterfall and stone sea
A walk through the beautiful Šomoška Natural Reserve with a unique stone waterfall, basalt castle, basalt stone-pit and a basalt stone sea.
The Stone Waterfall (Kamenný vodopád) is made of regular, up to 9-meter long basalt cuboids with five or six sides. They formed some 4 million years ago when basalt lava cooled in the volcano crater. The nearby Šomoška Castle was built from such basalt blocks. In fact, the workers building the castle discovered the waterfall when they were searching for material for the castle.
The trail will bring you also to an old basalt stone-pit. With a bit of luck you can spot here Salamandra Salamandra, an endangered amphibian.
